Quiet Days Come to an End

After a few 'quiet' days at turtle base camp, Audubon Nature Institute received four new turtles.

After what seemed like a few ‘quiet’ days, Audubon received four new turtles on Sunday. NOAA rescued three Kemp’s Ridleys and one Hawksbill turtle during their on-water surveys.  The turtles were turned over to Audubon Aquarium (and LMMSTRP) staff to begin the painstaking task of cleaning and rehabilitating the turtles.

Sunday's findings brings our turtle count up to 32 animals being housed at Audubon Aquatic Center. As with our previous ‘patients’, the four new guys underwent a good ol’ fashion sudsing and scrubbing, veterinary exams, as well as a round of fluids and antibiotics.

One of the interesting tools used during the veterinary exam was an ultrasound machine that allowed our staff to hear the turtle's heartbeat. The vets were able to monitor the beats per minute and whether or not their rhythm was regular or irregular. In the picture, our visiting veterinarian, Dr. Innis, uses the ultrasound machine on the newest Hawksbill that came in - isn't he tiny.

What will tomorrow hold? We never know but we are ready for anything and everything. Until then:
