Reading is FUNdamental

We love Festivals here in New Orleans. Actually we love to celebrate absolutely everything. For some it may seem a bit strange to have 3 festivals on the same day all within walking distance of each other, but here we think differently, move differently and yes - most importantly - eat differently. So of course we have tons of different festivals celebrating all sorts of food. What else can we celebrate that’s unique? I’ll tell you! It’s happening this Saturday at Audubon Zoo from 10am to 5pm where we’ll celebrate the joy of reading at the first New Orleans Book Festival! My kids enjoy storytelling time and we read to them every night. My daughter Payton gets a kick out of the “Oh David” books and loves the story “Too Many Toys.” My two year old Colin loves interactive books; he enjoys the Winnie the Pooh books with the sound buttons you press as you read. While I’m reading he just keeps pressing the buttons. I like his enthusiasm when he’s pressing the sounds because I know he is engaged in the book. Every evening before bed Payton and Colin like me to read a book. The hard part in this ritual is deciding on one book to read together. This takes just a little time and a lot of persuasion on my part. And after every story time I always hear, “Read it again Mommie!” Now I’m no fool and Payton loves to delay bedtime, so this also takes some negotiation and coaxing, but off to bed they go. I do give in sometimes and read it again but I keep that at a minimum so that it’s not expected. I encourage them to read constantly it’s a joy for me as well. Reading opens your mind to another world of imagination and creativity. I challenge everyone to take part in reading a good book. To jump start your quest, come out to Audubon Zoo this Saturday August 14thfrom 10am to 5pm and join us in celebrating books!
