Audubon Mobile Programs Bring the Wonders of Nature to Schools

If you haven’t been in schools in a while, then you might not know that kids don’t go on as many field trips as they used to. Often schools limit the days that children can go on field trips and there’s also the huge expensive of gas for transportation and the insurance concerns. When I was a teacher my students got only one field trip a year and it had to be scheduled after standardized tests had passed.

Children who live close to New Orleans are very lucky, though because Audubon Nature Institute has a number of mobile programs that bring the animal experience right to the school. This year my son’s school has had the AquaVan, Bugmobile, Wetland Express and ZOOmobile. The ZOOmobile was definitely Charlie’s favorite--I think it’s the furry animals!

It was just last week that the AquaVan came and the other two have come at other times of the year. Multiple classes get to visit with the animals, and experience a thirty minute presentation. There are multiple presentations to choose from as well. The Aqua Van has been granted a donation from Chevron so that any Title I schools in the New Orleans area can get one free visit from the van!

Each presentation costs just $75. If the presentation takes place within forty-five miles of the zoo there are no transportation costs!
