Education Discovery Walk Intern
Volunteer Internship Summary:
Audubon Zoo is now accepting applications for one unpaid Education Discovery Walk Internship. Discovery Walk is a hands-on animal and environmental based education area at the center of the Audubon Zoo. The Education Discovery Walk Intern will assist with the program animal encounters and educational presentations at the five education stations in Audubon Zoo’s Discovery Walk, mentor and assist volunteers in handling and presentation skills, assist the Discovery Walk Coordinator with proper animal packing and unpacking, assist in proper cleaning of animal kennels and exhibit spaces, assist in Discovery Walk maintenance and improvements, and assist in the proper presentation, storage and use of biofacts. You will be trained on how to properly handle a variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and birds in a presentation setting.
The Education Discovery Walk Interns will interact with Audubon Zoo education staff, animal staff and volunteers of all ages under the guidance of the Discovery Walk Coordinator. Opportunities to take part in related events (e.g. overnights, camps, conservation events, etc.) may arise and offer valuable experience. These unpaid volunteer internships are offered on a full-time basis for a 3-month duration between May - August, 2013, although some scheduling flexibility is available.
• A current college student or recent graduate (within the past year)
• Have proof of a current negative TB test.
Be outgoing with good communication and organizational skills
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Enjoy working with a variety of age groups
Enjoy working with a variety of animals
Be comfortable speaking in front of an audience
Have strong interest in volunteering to advance the missions of zoos and aquariums
Ability to multi-task
Ability to work both as a team and independently
Have a professional demeanor
Be passionate and curious about the natural world
* Interns work outside and in all weather conditions. This means extreme heat and humidity in southern Louisiana.
