Audubon Zoo is currently seeking an experienced, knowledgeable, and innovative professional to join our dynamic Primate Team. The ideal candidate will have a strong team work ethic, a passion for wildlife, and an enthusiasm for enhancing the guest experience.

 

Audubon Zoo is an exciting place to work, as there are many new projects currently underway along with planned future exhibit enhancements within the zoo. 

 

This is a full time position and reports directly to the Assistant Curator of Primates.

 

Primate Keeper II-III responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Providing high standards of daily animal care, animal observations, animal training and enrichment, monitoring animal health, maintaining cleanliness of animal areas, and minor exhibit modifications

Working with veterinarians and veterinary department staff to ensure the maintenance of animal health and welfare

Conduct general maintenance of grounds and public areas

Experience in conducting public presentations, behind-the-scenes VIP tours, educational talks, and assisting with research and conservation initiatives

Assisting with training and supervision of Primate Keeper I and II staff

Maintaining accurate records

Carry out other duties as assigned by supervisor

Requirements:

Four year degree in a biology related field preferred; however, substantial paid experience may be considered as a substituted for a degree

Minimum of four years paid primate keeper experience in an AZA accredited facility experience working with great apes preferred, as well as a variety of both New and Old World Primates

Proven safety record working with primates

Proven knowledge and practice with operant conditioning and environmental enrichment

Ability and willingness to work in a strenuous work environment that includes working outdoors in all weather conditions

Willing to work weekends, holidays, overtime, and flexible to adjust to a roster that suits the teams’ needs when needed

High standard of organizational and written / oral communication skills

Ability to multi-task and work well alone or with others in a team environment

Ability to obtain a valid Louisiana driver’s license

Ability to lift 50 lbs

Current (within 6 months) proof of a negative TB test
