On January 24, 2013 Audubon Zoo welcomed the birth of a new baby Babirusa! Affectionately named Fig, this little piglet is enjoying her days being with her family and exploring the world around her. Fig's mother, Betty, was born in St. Louis, MO but her father, Wrigley, was born at Audubon Zoo.
Fig's birth is very important to the world. Although babirusa are a protected species they are threatened in the wild due to illegal hunting and habitat loss. The word Babirusa means "pig-deer" in Malay, the language of the Babirusa's native home on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia.
Babirusa may live far away, but you don't have to travel around the world to see them...you can find this active family at home in the Zoo's Asian Domain.
