Certifying Gulf Fisheries
Holding our Fisheries to the Highest Standard
Seafood buyers and suppliers are seeing increased demand from their customers to demonstrate that the seafood they buy and sell is sourced from responsibly managed fisheries. As a result, many businesses are starting to require credible verification of this claim from an independent third-party, i.e. certification.
Certification is awarded to a fishery based on a third party’s assessment and evaluation of that fishery’s compliance with a specified standard. Certification does not necessarily include a consumer-facing ecolabel but can be an effective way of communicating responsible fisheries management throughout the supply chain.
Through G.U.L.F., Audubon Nature Institute will assist interested fisheries in obtaining certification to document and confirm that these fisheries are responsibly managed. By providing this additional assurance to buyers and supplier, Audubon Nature Institute seeks to differentiate Gulf seafood products in the marketplace to maintain, and potentially increase, their market share.
G.U.L.F. is currently sponsoring the assessment of three fisheries for FAO-Based Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) Certification Program:
- Louisiana Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus)
- Louisiana Oyster (Crassostrea virginica)
- Gulf Red Snapper (Lutjanus campechanus)
These fisheries are currently in the Validation, or Pre-Assessment, phase of the assessment process. Please check back often for the latest on these fisheries’ progress toward certification.
