Brees Foundation and Pepsi Benefit Audubon Nature Institute
The Brees Dream Foundation is matching a $25,000 Pepsi contribution, to provide $50,000 in total support to Audubon Nature Institute and the Louisiana Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program. Pepsi Beverages Company, the local Pepsi bottler for South Louisiana, announced that in conjunction with the Brees Dream Foundation, they would be assisting Audubon Nature Institute in their diligent efforts to care for oiled sea turtles and marine mammals.
“Needless to say, 2010 is not an ordinary year!,” said Laurie Conkerton of Audubon Nature Institute. “We have received more than 180 turtles, which required cleaning, medical attention and observation. Our staff is working closely with NOAA and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to coordinate transportation to our Audubon Aquatic Center and on general wildlife rehabilitation protocol.”
Audubon Nature Institute is the coordinator of the Louisiana Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program. Audubon holds the Louisiana state permit to rescue, rescue, rehabilitate and release marine mammals and sea turtles. Because the animals cannot be released back into their native habitat, they must be housed until the Gulf is safe for release. The rescue and rehabilitation of each sea turtle is estimated at $5,000 for equipment, supplies, medication and veterinary staff time. With the help of The Brees Dream Foundation and Pepsi, Audubon will be able to support their oil spill response work with minimal impact on all other Audubon operations.
Since its inception, Brittany and Drew Brees and the Brees Dream Foundation have committed more than 6 Million Dollars to charitable causes and educational institutions in the New Orleans, San Diego, and West Lafayette/Purdue communities. They are proud to be a reliable and accountable charity solution. The Foundation strives to make a positive impact on the communities in which they serve.
“The work being performed by Audubon Nature Institute is excellent”, said Drew Brees. “The Brees Dream Foundation is proud to partner with the Pepsi Refresh Project to support the ongoing needs of the Gulf Coast.”
