Buck the Sea Otter Celebrates His 15th Birthday!
|
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Happy Birthday Buck!
(New Orleans, La.)– Join visitors and Audubon Aquarium animal staff as they celebrate Buck the sea otter's 15th birthday. Guests are invited to make cards, sing Happy Birthday and celebrate with Buck as he enjoys a special three-tiered cake made with the finest ingredients including clams and crab claws on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 2pm. Buck and his roommate Emma were orphaned as pups along the California coast and were not able to survive successfully on their own. After arriving at Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in 1999, the much loved pair settled right in. The playful duo benefit from Audubon's sea otter enrichment program which includes a wide range of toys, treats and daily training. The training program is particularly important because it increases the bond between the animals and the husbandry staff, provides mental exercises, and enables the animals to participate in their own health care. The training sessions are positive and fun so health care becomes stress-free as the otters come willingly when it's time for weigh-ins and check-ups. Once hunted nearly to extinction for their luxurious fur, Southern sea otters are now a critically endangered species. There are less than 3,000 Southern sea otters left in their natural environment and Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is one of only a handful of zoological facilities that houses Southern sea otters.
