Adult Volunteer Programs
At Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium you can choose from five different programs to assist the facility. Please read through the descriptions below to find the perfect fit for you at our museum.
Bug Ambassadors serve as the link between the animals that we house at the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium and the thousands of guests that visit our facility each year. Bug Ambassadors interpret live animal exhibits, engage visitors in learning, assist staff with live animal presentations and are a welcoming face for guests.
Butterfly Garden/Metamorphosis Lab volunteers assist staff with the care and maintenance of the butterfly garden and the animals housed there. They also conduct live animals presentations at the Metamorphosis Lab counter. Butterfly Garden/Metamorphosis Lab volunteers are trained only in this area of the museum.
Bug Appétit volunteers assist staff by offering an out of this world experience into the culture of eating bugs. These volunteers conduct a continuous presentation about our edible insects by engaging the guests in the various recipes cooked up daily. Volunteers who work weekend shifts will also be required to assist staff with birthday parties that are held at the Insectarium. Bug Appétit volunteers are trained only in this area of the museum.
Boudreaux's Bait Shop/Swamp volunteers welcome guests to the bayou by presenting live animal encounters of arthropods native to the Louisiana Wetlands. These volunteers also assist staff with the care and maintenance of the exhibit and the animals housed there. Boudreaux's Bait Shop/Swamp volunteers are trained only in this area of the museum.
Insect Rearing Facility/Greenhouse volunteers assist the staff located at our offsite facility in New Orleans East. The Insect Rearing Facility, or IRF, is the "behind the scenes" area where the animals and plants are housed that are not currently on display at the Insectarium downtown. IRF volunteers assist the staff with the care and husbandry of the animals located at this facility. Volunteers in this program may also spend time in the large greenhouse that is located on the property. These volunteers are required to have their own mode of transportation to and from the IRF and be able to work in the early morning business hours. IRF/Greenhouse volunteers are trained only at this offsite location and not at the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium.
Cross training in any of our programs is possible.
To be eligible to volunteer you must be 16 years of age or older, complete the training course, and commit to one weekly shift. A contribution of $35.00 helps cover costs of training materials and uniforms.
