Crane Department
![]() |
Intern will gain valuable, hands-on experience working with Mississippi Sandhill and Whooping cranes under the supervision of the Crane Coordinator. This internship will emphasize chick-rearing, including the application of costume-rearing techniques for cranes bred for release to the wild. Interns must be able to work outdoors in physically demanding conditions (work is done in costume, in 90+ degree heat, for extended periods of time).
Must be 18 years of age and older. Internship is 12 weeks and require a 5 day per week (40hr) commitment. The care of animals is a job that takes place 7 days a week 365 days a year and interns will be required to work weekend days and holidays side-by-side with staff. These are unpaid internships but housing is available at no charge.
Whooping cranes are the most endangered crane in the world; in the 1930’s these cranes disappeared from the state of Louisiana and by 1941 their number in the wild dwindled to a mere 14 birds. See two of these rare canes on your next visit to Audubon Zoo.
